I’m Jenna, and I’m a 26-year-old girly girl native “New Yorker (now New York sports traitor)” who moved to Boston just over two years ago. For the past year and a half I have spent my free time getting to know the ins and outs of my new city…including its intense sports fans, who are hard to ignore. My interests have always been very feminine and I’ve never cared about sports, in fact, I’ve always been adamantly disinterested. However, living in a new city, knowing few people, looking to meet more (and have a fun way to spend my lazy Sundays), I realized that sports are more than just entertainment, sports are a social unifier, a topic of conversation that can engage two completely different people with nothing in common for hours on end. With this realization, I gave myself the mission of learning everything I could about football with the goal of eventually understanding why men are so taken with it, and to ultimately be able to join in with this culture and dialogue that seemed so alien to me. While my motivations to “understand” the allure of football and learn about the teams and players were legitimate, I had ulterior motives as well…men. Let’s face it, girls who can hold a conversation about sports are impressive in the eyes of the opposite sex. As I was newly single at the time, I was also hoping that my new-found knowledge would serve me well in the future by impressing potential suitors.
Three years later, I am proud to say that I am officially an invested football watching enthusiast and Patriots-obsessed fan. I set out to understand why on earth men (or women!) would care about football, and I get it…it’s an experience, it’s a community, and it’s fun. I also set out to see how sports could help me meet and connect to people in my new hometown, which has been more than successful as I have formed new friendships and had some unforgettable experiences that I never would have thought possible. For example, I participated in the Chrysler 200 Game On Blogger Road Trip where I drove the all new Chrysler 200 car through NFL cities to the NFC Championship game in Chicago and then to the mother of all sporting events, the 2011 Super Bowl!
My education and fanship has only just begun and I thank you for reading and coming along for the ride!
